Forestry Equipment Selection Guide

Excavator Attachment Sizing

How to Choose the Right Forestry Attachment for Your Excavator

Not sure which attachment fits your carrier? This guide covers the full OMEF, Shearex, Dipperfox, Powerhand and TreviBenne range for Australian and New Zealand conditions. Below you will find application tables that pair common forestry jobs – land clearing, stump removal, tree felling and log handling – to the correct attachment type, plus excavator sizing tables that map carrier weight to hydraulic flow requirements. If you need a compatibility check, our technical team can confirm oil flow, pressure and mounting specifications for your specific machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about matching forestry attachments to your excavator. For specific hydraulic or compatibility advice contact our technical team

What size tree shear do I need for my excavator?
Match the OMEF Big Inch model to your carrier weight: BI100 for 1.5–3 ton, BI200 for 2.5–8 ton, BI300 for 7–18 ton, BI400 for 14–24 ton, BI500 for 23–40 ton, and BI600 for 30–50 ton excavators. Always confirm hydraulic flow and pressure before purchase.
Which stump grinder fits a 5 ton excavator?
The Dipperfox SC400 is designed for 1.5 to 5 ton excavators. For 6–14 ton carriers, use the Dipperfox SC600. For 14–30 ton excavators, the Dipperfox SC850 is the correct fit.
What is the difference between a stump grinder and a stump cutter?
A stump grinder (Dipperfox SC series) uses a cutting wheel to grind stumps into mulch. A stump cutter (TreviBenne WE series) uses a drum or cutter head to crush and grind stumps below ground level. Stump cutters are suited to 11.5–28 ton excavators, while stump grinders cover 1.5–30 tons.
Which grapple saw fits a 10 ton excavator?
For a 10 ton excavator, use the OMEF GS400 (5–10 ton / 400mm cut) or the Powerhand EX 25 with saw attachment (6–12 ton). The OMEF GS250 (3–6 ton) also overlaps at the lower end of this range.
What log grab fits a 20 ton excavator?
For 20 ton excavators, use the Powerhand EX 28 (12–25 ton) or EX 36 (16–25 ton). The OMEF PFIMX 1000 covers 5–10 ton carriers, while the Powerhand EX 40 handles 20–30 ton machines.
Can I use a stump shear on a mini excavator?
No. OMEF stump shears require larger carriers. The ST90 fits 12–20 ton excavators and the ST140 fits 20–35 ton excavators. Mini excavators under 10 tons do not have sufficient hydraulic power or lifting capacity for stump shears.
Which forestry attachment is best for land clearing?
For vegetation and brush clearing, use an OMEF forestry mulcher. For tree removal, use an OMEF Big Inch tree shear or an OMEF grapple saw. For stump removal after felling, use a Dipperfox stump grinder or TreviBenne stump cutter. For handling cut timber, use a Powerhand or OMEF log grab.
What hydraulic flow do I need for a stump grinder?
Hydraulic flow requirements vary by model and excavator size. The Dipperfox SC400 requires lower flow suited to mini excavators, while the SC600 and SC850 need higher flow rates. Always check your excavator's hydraulic specifications against the attachment requirements before purchase.
